What Is Your Favorite Thing About Easter?

I absolutely love Spring.  Here where I live, Easter is usually right around the time when Spring is in full bloom.  I love the weather warming up, the flowers & trees blossoming, animals become very active and you can hear kids playing outside.

My absolute favorite thing to do is just step outside and breath it all in.  Nothing is more enjoyable or relaxing than to see Spring come alive.

 It is always fun to see all the kids line up at the mall and wait to meet the Easter bunny.  They are always dressed up so cute in their matching Easter clothing, adorable little hats and bows.  I also enjoy watching a good Easter egg hunt.  It is neat to see even the littlest of kids get so excited to find a hidden egg.

Every year, our family gathers at my mom's house and have an Easter lunch.  After lunch, we sit inside and chat while she goes out and hides the eggs in the yard.  She makes a lot of them really easy to find as our kids are still pretty young.  Some of them she makes more difficult.  We take lots of pictures and video of the kids searching for the eggs.  They each have a basket to fill.  It is really cute to see them fill their baskets to overflow and more eggs fall out then they put in.  This is a tradition that I play to continue and hope my kids will continue it with their children as well.

Don't forget about my annual Easter egg voting contest here on the blog.  The week before Easter, my family gets together one night and we paint eggs.  We try to make original creations.  One egg picture from each family member is uploaded onto my blog and I let my readers vote on which egg is their favorite.  I usually offer a gift card to a store to one lucky person who votes.  Not only is this a fun opportunity for you, my readers, but also bragging rights for my lucky family member.  I have yet to have one of my eggs be a winner :-(.  Last year, my mom's won and the year before my 2 year old won.  Lots of fun is had by all.

Though I love the awesome Easter weather, Spring coming alive, kids enjoying festivities, the real meaning of Easter is always first on my mind.  It is the day we celebrate that Jesus rose from the grave and fulfilled Bible prophecy.  Just like at Christmas, He is the real reason for the season!  Rather than dressing my kids up to go see the Easter bunny, we dress up to go to church and celebrate Jesus with all our friends.

A 3 Year Old's Must-Have!

I reviewed this book last year but my son was really too young to grasp the concept.  He loved the pictures and wanted me to read him the book but it wasn't until this year that he really got it.  This year was the first year he was to go to the dentist.

About 1 week before his dentist appointment, I grabbed this book back out and read it to him.  He remembered it and really loved it this time.  Each different tool in the book, I was sure to explain to him and let him know that he was going to see all those tools. 

He wanted me to read the book to him several times a day.  By the day of his dentist appointment, he knew what each tool was called and what it does.  When we went in, he was telling the dental assistant what each thing was before she had a chance to.  He was ready.  He was not scared of anything she pulled out.  He thought the whole process was cool, like he was living out his story book.

If you have a little guy that is about to go to the dentist, you may want to consider investing in this book.  It really was neat to see my little guy just glow at all the dental equipment instead of fear it.  He still can't talk about how clean his Melvins are!

Office Max & Peter Walsh School Organization Help

How is your school kid doing this year? Have you noticed difficulty in organization or asking yourself, where do I put all these papers. How long do I need to keep all the graded work? Where do I begin? Now that school has been going for a while, you may want to evaluate your organizational situation.

Peter Walsh would like to help answer some of these questions. He has set up some organizational tips for the classroom, backpack, home office, etc.

Organization in the Classroom:

• Color Coding: Color coding things like words, symbols, etc helps kids to remember the subject easier.
• Attend Parent/Teacher Meetings: This will give you a different perspective on your child and how they react to situations when away from home. You may know your child well or hear things that may surprise you. Teachers appreciate feeling respected, your attendance can demonstrate this to them.
• Teacher's Gift: It has always been the thing to give a teacher an apple. Teachers would rather receive school supply donations. A lot of the decorating costs come out of their own pocket, not covered by the school.
• Organize: If the kids are involved with organizing their own things, they feel more a part of it and learn to love it even more.

Organizing the Backpack:

• Teach your child how to properly use their backpack: Large compartment for books, medium for lunchbag, small for pens/pencils and other smaller supplies. Help your child decide what goes where.
• Each evening, have your child show you their backpack. Help them organize any papers that they may have taken home or any extra items that may have been picked up along the way.
• If you show concern for organization, your child will have a greater respect for it and see the importance.

Tips to Organize:

• Show the value of organization in your own things. Have a place for your mail, keep things orderly in your home, teach them to put laundry away right away, etc.
• Establish clear limits and routines. Kids are very routine oriented. They thrive on discipline and order. The more you can help them with this, the better they will feel about the world around them.
• Always "finish the cycle". Whatever organization you start with them, make sure you keep up with it. If you slack even for one day, the cycle can be broken and you have to start all over.
• Be sure to use the right tools for organization. Figure out what you need to organize what your child has, get it and be sure to teach them how to use it properly and regularly.
• Organization relieves stress and gives your child confidence. Where there is chaos, their is stress. I'm sure you have witnessed that in your life. When your house is a mess, you feel stressed. Your kids experience the same things when things are chaotic in their lives.
• Set out or have them pick out their clothes the night before. This way they are not rushed in the morning to get ready and stress over what to wear. If they pick it out the night before, you will know if they need socks washed, etc.

Tools for Organization:

• Organize their pencil case: Seperate pens/pencils, glue & scissors, etc into different sections fo the pencil case. The best kind to use is the ones with seperate zipper compartments for optimum organization.
• Binders: Ask their teacher what needs to be kept in the binders to be brought to school everyday and what can be stored at home. Label the binders with a labeler. Be sure to regularly empty out the binders to organize excess papers at home.
• File Cabinet: Be sure to have a file cabinet available for papers to be kept in for the year that doesn't need to be in the binders to and from school daily.

Organizational Tips for Home:

• Find a vision that you have for their home work space. Whether this be their own desk or a desk that they share with you &/or others in the family. It is optimum for them to have their own individual work space to organize and keep orderly.
• Make organization a family value. Make sure everyone in the house considers organization important. This mindset is contagious and very helpful!
• Once you visualize the work space, attain the proper equipment to make it orderly easiest.
• Desktop Organizers: Whether this be expandable file folders or file cabinet, or bins to organize.
• Pencil Cup: This will help you and your child know where their supplies are and get to them easier. If you need several to keep things seperate. For instance, one for pens/pencils, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.
• Drawers: Organize the drawers with other supplies like stapler, ruler, calculator, protractor, etc.

Dinosaur Train Review!

Have you heard of "Dinosaur Train" yet? If not, let me tell you a little bit about this new TV show on PBS Kids Network.

The CEO of The Jim Henson Company, Lisa Henson says of the show, “We wanted to create an educational series that allows parents and their kids to explore and discover natural and life sciences in a fun, imaginative way. They’ll be inspired to ask interesting questions about both dinosaurs and trains, and will be eager to investigate the answers together.”

The show aired for the first time on Labor Day and can be seen throughout the week on PBS. The show is written as if seen through the eyes of a young Tyrannosaurus Rex named Buddy. Buddy was adopted by a family of Pteranodons. Buddy and his family go on daily adventures on the Dinosaur train so discover new and amazing things and other dinosaurs. Viewers will learn many interesting facts about dinosaurs and their eras.

Jim Henson Company was inspired to run this series by Sid the Science Kid that is set for a slightly older age group of children. Dinosaur Train is geared more toward Pre-school views and their parents.

My son watched Dinosaur Train for the first time the other day and won't stop talking about it. He is only 1 year old and constantly asks me to watch it. Getting Baby Products for Cheap
