SAVE MONEY AT THE PUMP
We can shave off dollars and cents every day by doing little things. The tips below from the car-care experts at Jiffy Lube will not only help keep your vehicle in top shape – helping to avoid potentially costly breakdowns in the future – and put a few dollars back in your pocket.

· Engine Air Filter: An air filter is essentially your vehicle’s lung. A clean air filter helps the engine “breathe” and run more efficiently, while a clogged one makes the engine work harder. According to the Federal Government, replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car’s gas mileage by as much as 10%. Check your vehicle owner’s manual for when to replace your engine air filter.

· Tires: Tires can be gas bandits as under-inflated tires create extra friction where the rubber meets the road. Incorrectly inflated tires also wear unevenly, which can impact your vehicle’s traction on the road and possibly lead to a dangerous blowout. According to the Federal Government, you can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3% by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. You can find your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure information in the vehicle owner’s manual or often on a decal typically in the vehicle’s door jamb or in the vehicle owner’s manual.

· Oil Grade: Motor oil lubricates the engine, keeping it cool and reducing friction between moving parts. As the motor oil circulates, it also cleans away harmful dirt and contaminants. When motor oil gets too dirty, it loses some of its lubrication and absorption abilities. According to the Federal Government, using your vehicle owner’s manual recommended grade oil can improve your gas mileage up to 2% -- savings which can add up over time! Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for the correct grade of motor oil for your vehicle.

· Lighten Your Load: Extra weight means more strain on your vehicle and more fuel burn. According to the Federal Government, vehicle drag can decrease your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by 2%. Leave unnecessary items at home before setting out on a drive.

· Avoid Aggressive Driving: According to the Federal Government, rapid acceleration/braking can lower your gas mileage up to 5% around town.

· Carpooling: Taking advantage of carpools could cut your weekly gas usage in half. Not only will mom save a few bucks, but she’ll get some much-needed time back!

SUMMER TRAVELWe all value our summer vacations – they allow us to de-stress and recharge. A recent Jiffy Lube International survey that reveals despite the economy, people are not deterred from taking a vacation this year. In fact, plans for summer travel are up 4% from last year. One way people are being economical, yet still enjoying themselves is planning trips to places that cost little to no money – such as the beach, historical sites, national parks and museums. I’ve included statistics on the top summer vacation destinations below.
Think the economy has travelers staying at home this summer? That’s not the case according to a new survey from Jiffy Lube International.
88% of people surveyed say they plan on taking a vacation this summer, a 4% increase from 2008.
While people are not willing to sacrifice their vacation, they are however changing how they get there. 71% of travelers plan to jump in their family car, avoiding buying plane or train tickets and long security lines; 30% prefer air travel, and 12% plan to travel by bus or train (six% each).
Top 2009 summer vacation destinations (according to a recent Jiffy Lube International survey):
The beach (63%)
Historical sites (51%)
A national park (46%)
Museums (40%)

Preserve Cutting Board Giveaway!

Have you heard of Preserve? They are a company that makes items from 100% recycled materials. Their motto is Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Their company was started in 1996 to help conserve the environment. All of their plastic items are made from #5 polypropylene plastic collected from consumers just like you!

They have a program called Gimme 5. This allows you as the consumer to recycle your food storage containers. Click here for more information on the process. There are several ways to get your recycleable items to them:
  • Bring them to a Whole Foods Market Store near you.
  • Send by mail.
  • Call to arrange if you have a large shipment.

Now for the awesome part, Preserve has offered one of my readers a chance to try out their product. How would you like to win a Preserve Cutting Board? I received mine in the mail a few weeks ago to try out. It is one sturdy cutting board. It has a curved edge on the left side so you have a convenient place to hold or carry it by. They are about 1/4" thick which is fantastic!

The cutting board for the giveaway is the blue one you see above.

Here is how you enter: (Open to US residents only.)

  1. Visit Preserve and fill out the form below entering which item you would like to try other than the cutting boards.

Extra Entries: (Fill out a seperate form for each entery!)

  1. Follow my blog (click the link on the left sidebar).
  2. Follow me on Twitter, Technorati, or Facebook.
  3. Comment with a recyling tip.

Mark Giveaway Winner!

The winner of my mark. Giveaway is Aik (aikychien@). Congrats!

Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway. There are several more to come so check back often!

Mission Possible Mondays!

HERE IS YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT:

Try to eat a fruit and vegetable at every meal and for snacks instead of junk food.

DETAILS:

Fruits and vegetables have a great deal of nutrition that would be a great benefit to anyone's diet. It is recommended that adults eat 7-10 fruits and vegetables a day. Do you eat that many? I know I struggle to eat one at every meal which only makes 3. No where near what should be eaten a day.

Since last week's mission was to go to the farmers market, return this week to get the fruits and vegetables needed for each meal.

DEADLINE:

Try to do this all week at the least and continue it on each day forever! At least try to do it this week and see if you feel a difference in energy.

LAST WEEK'S MISSION: FAILED!

Last time the Mission was to "Make an effort to find and go to a Farmer's Market this week instead of getting your produce from a grocery store."

I know where 2 major Farmer's Markets are. One is about 10 minutes from my house and the other is about 40 minutes away. I had every intention of going to the close one this week but things got CRAZY and I didn't make it out. I plan on going this weekend and stock up.

How did you do? Did you complete the mission? If so, leave a comment here. Do you know where a Farmer's Market may be? Leave a comment with that here also, it may just help someone else who lives near.

I Need Organization - In Place System Review

Is there anything room in your home or office that you just look at and say, "Man, what a mess! This needs some organization!"? There is a new organization system that just might work for you. It is called the In Place System and can be purchased at any OfficeMax store. Peter Walsh is the designer.

The main place I have clutter in my home is in the dining room. This seems to be the dump off spot. Everything that gets brought in from the car and all the mail gets dumped onto the table and sits there until there is such a pile that you can't even see the tabletop. This is very frustrating for me and I realized that organization needed to happen. I started using the In Place System Travel Binder. I have each category that mail should go into labeled on individual envelopes. Whoever brings in the mail is to sort it into the appropriate folder immediately. This doesn't completely declutter my table but it is a positive start. I plan to set up the rest of the system in my workroom downstairs. I am excited to become more organized and clean. If you have a home office or run an office, this is a great system to initiate. The picture above shows just a few of the elements to the system. You see the Travel Binder to transport important information from home to the office or from the office to an appointment. There is File Organizer that can be placed into a binder or file cabinet. There is also a Desktop File Sorter to keep your most important files. These should be files that you use very often. Those files that you only look at now and then should be placed in a file cabinet for safe keeping. There is a Portfolio Stand & Portfolio Sleeves for placing your important reports or documents that need to be easily accessible. Finally there are sticky notepads and a pen. The pen is a re-writeable eraser pen. One end is a pen that can write on the plastic of your system. The other end erases the writing so that it can be used for something else.

Peter Walsh also wrote a book called "Enough Already!". This book not only helps you to organize your work space but your mental space as well. He says that in order to stay organized with your workspace, you need to organize mentally. There are several areas in our lives that can get cluttered mentally. These are relationships, family, work, health, money and spirituality. This book offers step by step ways to organize each of these aspects of your life. He not only tells you about things to look for but he offers questionaires and little helpful forms that you can fill out to really allow you to evaluate yourself and your life. I found the book very interesting and useful. Definitely a good read if you are serious about decluttering your lifestyle. You can visit his website and order it here.

Thanks to Peter Walsh and Office Max for the reviewed products and organizational help.
